Stolen GPS Device Recovered by Amityville Police
A GPS device allegedly stolen by a man on his bike has been recovered
by Amityville police, the bike man with the name Alex Balista, age 33
and who claimed to come from Coptague was arrested by the police
officer after discovering the address of the device's owner by pushing
the "home" button on the system.
The police officer, Sgt Brian Scott said that Alex drew suspicion to
himself because he was struggling to ride the bike on Merrick Road
with the device in his arms and with protruding wires dangling near
the spokes.
When checked, the "home" address listed on the GPS device was a block
away from the stop, on Grand Central Avenue. When officers went there,
the owner said he didn't know his van had been vandalized but
confirmed the GPS device belonged to him. The owner admitted that he
had not locked his car before the theft and which occurred about five
minutes before the officer stopped Alex.
Also, some stolen amount totaling $1000 were recovered from Alex who
was arraigned on charges of larceny and criminal possession of stolen
property both misdemeanors, as well as ticketed for nighttime
operation of a bicycle without a light.
