The Blackberry Curve 8310

The next-generation Curve has arrived, the BlackBerry Curve 8310 is the smallest, lightest BlackBerry ever with a QWERTY keyboard. It features clean lines, curved edges, and easy-to-use trackball navigation. The sleek design balances both personal and work needs with the perfect blend of performance and usability. The Curve is the first BlackBerry to support AT&T Mobile Music, an enhanced media player, and stereo Bluetooth® headset capabilities. Snap crisp photos on the 2 MP camera with 5x zoom and flash. Need more storage? It has a microSD(TM) expandable memory slot to store music, videos and more. The Curve comes with BlackBerry's first email spellchecker, TeleNav Maps, and the AT&T Mall to shop for ringtones and downloads. Go global, the Curve has everything you ever needed or wanted in a BlackBerry.
The BlackBerry Curve 8310 is the first smartphone to use Vodafone Connect GPS navigation software from Yapp Mobile. The application is still under development -- the Curve prompted us to download a few updates during our test period -- and we found it getting slightly better with each new version. Vodafone Connect, however, isn't nearly as aesthetically pleasing or robust as standalone GPS units. In the end, we preferred to use Google Maps Mobile for our GPS and navigation needs. (Another application called BlackBerry Maps is pre-loaded, but it doesn't include Australian roads.)
RIM states the BlackBerry Curve 8310's battery life is good for four hours of talk or 17 days of standby. During testing we needed to charge the 8310 every other day with moderate-to-heavy use of e-mail, instant messenger, and light Web browsing and use of GPS navigation.
The Curve 8310 is a good enough smartphone for business users that occasionally need GPS, but it left us wanting more: a faster processor, 3G support (with HSDPA, of course) and Wi-Fi.
The Blackberry GPS achieved good signal acquisition times, but did not provide any real satellite information other than the number of satellites you're locked onto, their location, and range of position. This, of course, is more than enough for the average user. The Telenav maps loaded pretty quickly from their server via the AT&T network. The map quality was excellent and the directions, via voice or screen, were clear and easy to follow.
