Garmin Nuvi 5000

Designed specifically for those seeking premium navigation features on a large, 5.2-inch display the Garmin 5000 is now released with its large, touchscreen interface, which makes it one of the largest widescreen GPS devices currently available and with a screen resolution of 800 by 480 pixels it is very easy to read the display without straining the eyes.

Measuring 3.7 by 5.7 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 9.3 ounces the nüvi 5000 is hefty and bulky and therefore not quite easy to carry about. The nüvi 5000 comes preloaded with Navteq maps for the U.S. , Canada , and Puerto Rico . While the GPS doesn't have built-in live traffic capabilities, you can add an FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) receiver ($214), or and MSN Direct receiver ($125). Additionally, it automatically sorts multiple destinations providing the driver with the most direct and efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. Drivers who want to keep track of where they have been can turn on the track log feature and see an electronic breadcrumb trail that shows their previously travelled route on the display.

This device makes it easier than ever to obtain voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions, route calculation, and automatic rerouting if a motorist strays off course. Route planning is a cinch as the nüvi 5000 will save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the big screen.

Garmin says the Nuvi 5000 is now available for U.S. customers, retailing for $799.99.
