Puerto Rico plan to use GPS to protect domestic violence victims

Due to increasing cases of domestic violence in Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican government has decided to use GPS technology to protect women from dometic violence. According to Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila of Puerto Rico the pilot program will use GPS monitoring devices that alert police when a potential abusers violate court orders by entering protected areas chosen by the victims. In Puerto Rico, about 20,000 protection orders are issued yearly by the courts but its been really difficult for the police to respond fast enough in the cases an abuser decided to violate this protection orders and this has resulted in the death of nearly 22 women this year according to police records. Domestic violence victims can choose up to four areas such as homes or workplaces where there abuser are not allow to be. The co-ordinates of this locations are recorded against the abusers and if they enter those areas the police with be immediately notified The pilot program announced recently will handle up to 340 cases. Some other U.S. states have similar programs. This is yet another of several ways that GPS technology are being used to save lifes.
