A look at the 60GB Cowon Q5W

The Cowon Q5 is quite simply one of the best big touchscreen players for quality video. It is a portable media player with a stunning 5 inch touchscreen display and built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. The Cowon Q5W's 5-inch touch screen (800x480 resolution) is both beautiful and responsive. Like those on most PVPs, the Q5W's display is constructed with a reflective plastic that limits visibility in direct sunlight. Despite its secondary use as a mirror, however, low-light conditions make colors dramatically pop on the screen. The Q5W also includes a suite of Microsoft applications that run "natively" on its Windows CE 5 operating system, including MSN Messenger, Internet Explorer, WordPad (which makes the text reader somewhat redundant), and a couple of card games. For an extra $35, you can also have Cowon bundle a suite of Microsoft Office reader applications, allowing you to read (but not alter or save) files created in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. Because the Cowon Q5W is based on the Windows CE 5 operating system, there is the potential to run third-party software designed for this antiquated platform. The unit has a Bluetooth technology for wireless connectivity and there are two different version with internal memory of 40GB or 60GB.

With no subscription costs, you receive free access to the latest traffic data, allowing you to keep in touch with what's happening on the roads. The iCN 550 is equipped with a 12 Channel parallel GPS receiver and its performance is fairly speedy. In our driving tests, we found the unit took anywhere between 30 seconds and a minute to pick up a signal after being turned on and overall, it was quick and responsive. Even with an obscured view of the sky the iCN 550 still managed to maintain a constant signal while driving. The usual routing options, such as avoiding tolls or warning when routes include tolls are supported on the unit. Users can also set a preference for using motorways or normal urban roads and this is taken into consideration when the unit calculates a route. You can even tell the iCN 550 to avoid a specified area on the map. Navman has also included multilingual option to the SmartST 2005 navigation software and voice guidance available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, and Swedish.

LG Releases Portable LG LN740

LG has stormed the ultra-competitive GPS market this month with a splash, releasing the Portable Navigator LN740. LN740 is compactly built, sports a large screen, and comes with a number of accessories. The first thing that distinguishes this model from the entry level models is that it comes with a larger 4? display. Still small enough to be fairly portable, but the larger screen provides a bigger view of the road ahead. This screen provides you with clear, selectable 2D and 3D map views and menus that are easy to read at a glance, and features auto zoom, and day and night views that you can manually switch to, ensuring you can see no matter what your lighting conditions. With its sleek, black-lacquered finish and compact size (4.5-inches wide by 3.5-inches high by 0.7-inch deep; 7 ounces), the LG Portable Navigator LN740 is a good-looking portable navigation system. The GPS receiver is integrated into the device, so there's no added bulk on the back of the unit or need to flip up a patch antenna to get a GPS fix. The LG Portable Navigator LN740 is equipped with a 20-channel SiRFstarIII GPS receiver and comes preloaded with Navteq maps covering North America. For everyday trips, you can go straight to the Map page and have the LN740 track your location as you cruise. Otherwise, you can plan a trip by entering a specific address, choosing a recently visited location, or selecting a destination from the My Places list. Entering addresses is easy, as the system quickly returns with possible results as soon as you start entering the first few letters of any city, state, or street. Like most new mid to high-end GPS devices, LG's LN740 includes a photo viewer and MP3 player. Unfortunately, in order to access either the photo viewer or the MP3 player, you must exit the navigation application, making it impossible to listen to music while driving. One of the most exciting developments in GPS over the past year has been the wide-spread adoption of SiRF's high performance 20-channel receiver, dubbed SiRF StarIII. The one thing the LN740 lacks when compared to other systems in its class is integrated Bluetooth for hands-free calling. LN740 also offers voice-guided directions with text-to-speech functionality. While the unit supports 16 languages, the text-to-speech capabilities are only available in English, Spanish, and French.

Enjoy Great Performance with i-Blue 737A

i-Blue 737A, otherwise called i-Blue Edition 2 is the second generation of the popular i-Blue PS-3200 receiver that offers GPS users with best accuracy and highest sensitivity. This unit runs on the new MTK chipset and is equipped with a 51-channel MTK chipset, it provides ultra-high sensitivity -165dBm tracking and -148dBm signal acquisition. By integrating a smart power-saving option with fuzzy auto on/off, the iBlue 737A+ is also the most power-efficient receiver available. Highly sensitive and super-efficient, this device enjoys wide consumer appeal. Assisted GPS satellite data can be downloaded via the supplied AGPS software (PC application) into the i-Blue 737A+ and the i-Blue 747A+. With the current AGPS data loaded, GPS fix time will be reduced from 35 seconds to around 15 seconds. The iBlue 737 uses the same advanced bluetooth power management as the original i-Blue, Bluetooth auto-off/auto-on, with a rounder form factor. The big news though is the appearance of the MTK chipset, an excellent surprise since it packs the power of SiRFstarIII at about 50% of the power use. It terms of navigation, it is on par with SiRFstarIII and possibly even better when it comes to handling of multipath as seen below. Preliminary pedestrian use testing shows that the MTK chipset does not have any "static navigation" type of filtering implemented (unlike the RFMD based Rikaine 6032) so it is fully usable although the SiRFstarIII based BT-359 produces tracks that look more pleasing as they appear to have been "smoothed out".

It has a built-in speaker that works well as well. This model comes with preloaded United States and Canada maps. The voice prompts are good and very clear so you should have no problems with this phase of the unit. It comes with1.6 million points of interest and these include ATM's, restaurants, gas stations, as well as hotels. The database is very vast and easy to navigate through so you should have no problems at all with this feature and probably will go back to it very often. If you do miss a turn it really is no big deal as this unit will automatically recalculate your mistake and keep you going in the right direction, which is something that you will love. Speed alert is something that you will also use on the Nextar X3-03, as when you exceed the speed limit it will alert you to slow down saving you money on speeding tickets as well. It has just enough extras to keep you happy and still will make sure you find the correct route to your destination. If you are new to GPS or have been using different units for a number of years than I would take a look at the X3-03 and see if it fits into your plans.

To get started, simply select a destination and your RoadMate 800 GPS navigation system will take it from there. By matching letters to the available destinations, Magellan's QuickSpell address entry feature makes it easy and quick to enter destination addresses. An internal address book also stores up to 200 personal or business destinations for quick reference. This product features a 3.5" touch screen in the landscape position. It has 320x240 pixels full 16 bit color. There are very few specifications available for the unit, either on the web site or in the manual. It uses a 300 MHz ARM compatible Processor. It uses a 12 channel GPS receiver and does not have WAAS support. The GPS receiver is very sensitive, locking onto signals inside my home without problems. It has a patch antenna that folds up from the back of the unit. It is so sensitive that it will generally work even if you fail to open the antenna although it does better if the antenna is horizontal. Using a patch antenna is a major departure for Magellan as they usually use Quad helix designs. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county roads and highways. Portable and Resourceful GlobalTop G66

GlobalTop new GPS receiver, G66, is an amazing unit that comes with resourceful features which offer easy and friendly interface. The G66 sports a very slim and stylish form-factor, with a very elegant, yet fingerprint-prone piano-black finish, which will most likely appeal to PS3 or even iPhone owners. Moreover, the device is controlled via what the company calls a "hidden touch-sensitive touch pad", although I'm not quite sure what they understand by "hidden", since the control buttons are pretty visible. Boasting 51-channels, a reported 20-hours of battery life, and a built-in antenna, the oh-so-sexy G66 Touch measures in at just 3.09- x 1.96- x 0.27-inches. Additionally, you'll find USB connectivity / charging support, -158dBm sensitivity, a trio of LED indicators, and a fairly respectable start-up time. The design concept for this BT GPS receiver is not only make GPS only put in automobile but want users can put it in their pocket and take away to get their location with their mobile phone or handheld PDA. The G66 also comes bundled with a 7-day trial of the the Nokia smart2go mapping software, so that the users will be able to get a clue on how to use this thing.

The user needs simply to select s nearby point of interest via the interactive menu (or via voice command) to be presented with full details of it. Quality Auto Navigation with Sony NVU44

Also embedded is a feature Sony termed a Dual View mode which is a vertically split display with a 3-D map view on one side and either dynamic route information (distance to next destination, distance to final destination, next turn instruction etc.) or a 2-D magnification of an upcoming intersection or junction. The 2-D intersection magnification has a simple bar next to it indicating the distance to the next turn. The NV-U44 includes a text-to-speech which provides extra safety by allowing the driver to confirm they are on track by checking that the street names announced as part of the navigation instructions match the ones they are seeing as they drive. There is a USB port on the left side of the Sony NV-U44 for a USB drive to be inserted and JPEG photo files (up to 12 megapixels) uploaded. Slideshow intervals can be adjusted and finger gestures used for control as well. Through using route profile settings it is possible to set the Sony NV-U44 to avoid the use of ferries, toll roads, and other such conveyances when calculating your route. Up to ten waypoints (or interim destinations) can be set with the best route being calculated which is ideal for a task such as a delivery run or touring a number of tourist sites. So that you can confirm you are satisfied with the plotted route before commencing your journey it is possible to view the entire route. Route calculation conditions can be changed if necessary for a re-calculation or the route simply confirmed. If you want a closer look at your destination you can view a map of its vicinity.
